A friend once said to me - "fortune, I love to fail" and
I asked, why? - Long story short, there was too much sauce in what he said.
I tell you what.. I have grown to understand that -
It is a good thing to experience failure.. Failure is an integral
part of Success; In fact, if you have failed before, congratulations my dear.. You
are just on your way up! But do not settle there, Get up! Dust yourself off and
push forward. Life usually throws Lemons at us; sad-truth is, only the ones who
are brave with their lives, make lemonades out of it. - (Fortune Chinda)
Failure
is a necessary experience if you want to eventually be successful. That may
seem like an illogical statement, since failure and success are generally
considered complete opposites. However, the experience of failure is both
enlightening and motivating as long as you view it with the right perspective;
learning from your mistakes and working harder to achieve your goals are both
important ingredients in finding success.
I stumbled upon Michelle Obama’s last commencement speech, when she was First
Lady (at the City College of New York), few weeks back. She highlighted in her
speech, a lot of different social and political issues that our world is facing
today. Her entire talk was exceptionally educational and same-time inspirational;
Now! there was one part about adversity that stood out for me in particular,
and it applies also to the many failures we experience in life. “You should
never view your challenges as a disadvantage” said the First Lady. “Instead, it’s
important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming
adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages”
Failure in life is not only inevitable but also necessary. Here is
what we all need to remember when it comes to failing.
Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built
on frustration. Sometimes it’s built on catastrophe. – Sumner Redstone
Okay! LET'S LOOK AT FEW LESSONS LEARNT - FROM THE FAILURES OF
GREAT LEADERS:
1. Steve Jobs
A mastermind of technological innovation and corporate vision,
Steve Jobs is responsible for making Apple the company it is today. However,
his past is littered with failures, setbacks, and crushing defeats. Jobs
started Apple in 1976 and the company began to take off, but after an
unsuccessful product launch in 1985, Jobs was kicked out of his own company.
Most ordinary people would have given up at that point, but instead, Jobs
founded a new company called NeXT. NeXT was considered unsuccessful as well, at
least for a time, until it caught the eye of a struggling Apple in 1997. Apple
purchased the company and brought Jobs back into a leadership position, which
he used to develop and launch Apple's breakthrough products, including the
iPod, iPhone and iPad.
The
Lesson:
Perseverance is everything. Because he committed himself to doing
great things, Jobs was able to work past his personal and professional
failures, and eventually leave behind a monumental and unprecedented legacy.
2. Bill Gates
Bill Gates is one of the most recognizable figures in the tech industry,
responsible for creating Microsoft and currently standing as one of the wealthiest
people on the planet. Many people attribute his success to a kind of luck or sudden
twist of fortune; he had a great idea at just the right time during the technology
boom, and got rich developing it to perfection. But the reality is, Bill Gates experienced
a crushing failure before he had anything to do with Microsoft. Originally, Gates
created a product called Traf-O-Data, which analyzed data from traffic tapes. The
product didn't work properly, and the company never took off, so Gates decided to
try something else.
The
Lesson:
Traf-O-Data never had any hope of being successful, but that was no
reflection on Gates's potential. if your idea, even though it seems great, doesn't
pan out the way you thought it would, remember that you still have plenty of ideas
and opportunities ahead of you.
Failing doesn’t make you worthless
In today’s world, we are constantly preoccupied with what others
think about us. For some inexplicable reason, we want everyone to think we’re
successful and thriving. We fear that if we fail, we will be perceived as a
good-for-nothing. But everyone fails in life. I mean, look at Steve Jobs or
Bill Gates; did they become successful overnight?
Failing opens up new doors
While we often think of failing as the end of the world, it’s
actually a redirection. I know it’s hard to believe, but you have to understand
that every time something doesn’t work out, it’s because something way better
is on the way. All we have to do is work hard, be patient, and trust the
process.
Failing makes you stronger
Although failure knocks you down on your feet, it also forces you
to get back up and continue fighting. It forces you to get out of your comfort
zone and try things you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of trying. In other
words, failure forces you to grow. So every time you feel like you’ve hit rock
bottom, remember that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Failure is delay not defeat
Life has a funny way of taking unexpected turns, but I promise you
it’s nothing against you. You see, everything in life has its own timing, and
everyone on this planet has their own personal clock. So sometimes when you
fail, it’s not because you didn’t try hard enough. It’s because the universe is
telling you that it’s just not your time. What can you do in this case? Trust
your timing. Trust the process. Just like Steve Jobs once said:
You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect
them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect
in your future.

The moral of the Lesson: To quote Denzel Washington, “You will
fail.” Not once, not twice, but many, many times. That’s what life is about. So
stop being so hard on yourself. Focus on learning the lessons of each failure and
the next one will take you one step closer to success.
